I recently attended the 2019 Global Leadership Summit and man, was it powerful!
At GLS, top leaders from all over the world gather together at Summit Broadcast sites to grow forward… in a major way. (GLS is open to everyone, by the way. We are ALL leaders!) Year after year, we celebrate the motto that “When Leaders Get Better, Everybody Wins” and then we all go to work on getting better!
Here are my top 5 takeaways from this year’s summit:
1. Everyone Brings Something Important to the Table
We are all different, and that is a beautiful, wonderful thing! What a boring place this world would be if it were any other way.
We can all learn from each other, no matter what our beliefs, backgrounds, race or gender. We can glean wisdom from each other’s experiences and perspectives. We can choose to listen, more than talk, so that we can learn something new!
Everyone doesn’t have to be in agreement all the time. However, we can handle those disagreements with honor, by treating each other how we want to be treated. And we can love each other (sans judgement), as Jesus calls us to do.
2. Connect with People
Ahhh… a secret of life! Connect with real, actual people. Every where, every time. Know that there is a real, live person on the other side of every computer screen, telephone call, email blast.
That real, live person is reading and receiving everything (both good and bad) that you put out into the world.
At the end of our life, it’s not the things, or even the experiences that will matter. It’s the relationships. Connect with people!
3. Be Your (Awesome) Self!
You know that thing that’s different about you? The thing that some people love and some people hate and you’re always wondering whether you should ‘tone it down?’
It’s time to own it.

The thing that’s different about you is a gift that God gave you. It makes you unique. It sets you apart. It’s a tool designed to help you change the world!
Here’s the truth: Your difference? It may repel some people. THOSE ARE NOT YOUR PEOPLE and that’s okay! (Don’t mistake popularity with purpose.)
You were created with something unique. There is greatness within you. Embrace it!
4. Done is Better than Perfect
This year, something struck me. It was something that I already knew, actually… but to hear Pastor Craig Groeschel say out loud “done is better than perfect,” it struck me in a new way. I knew it, but I’m not sure I truly believed it until that moment.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to be a perfectionist. And it can steal away hours, on a daily basis… looking/checking things over and over and over again. Sometimes it keeps me busy, but not fruitful.
I commit to becoming more fruitful, more productive… and less busy by subscribing to the belief that “Done is Better Than Perfect.”
How can you prioritize today, so that you’re not just “busy,” but rather you are “fruitful?”
5. What Makes a Leader?
I think we sometimes get confused when we think of the term “leader.”
What actually makes a leader? Is it money or power or fame?
All. The. No.
What makes a genuine, heartfelt, impactful leader…. are the new leaders that leader raises up.

How many times have you talked about the mentors who have poured into your life, changed your life, even saved your life? Now, think about the people that YOU have poured into? Which list is longer? Our leadership is measured by the number of new leaders we have helped raise up!
